Tides of History: after Orpheus 2014

Tides of History: after Orpheus 2014

New Zealand

The constant flux of tides in the Manukau Harbour is central to the performance art work created by Brinsden, the Cardwell Art Collective, and students of Onehunga Primary School. The child-focussed performance event on Old Mangere Bridge by the school participants pays tribute to the sinking of the HMS Orpheus on the Manukau Bar on the 7th February 1863 and the subsequent rescues of sailors by waka.

The project acknowledges the differing cultural perspectives on this event. The artwork is developed in a collaborative process with children from Onehunga Primary School and The Cardwell Art Collective–a local community art group–who will traverse the bridge.

Zeitgeist: The Sound of Text 2011

Anne Mosseri-Marlio Gallery (Zürich)
Switzerland

Live Art
In collaboration with DJ Marco Kuster. Performed 20th May 2011. I was commissioned by Olga Stephen to make a Live Art work for an event she was hosting at the Anne Mosseri-Marlio Gallery, Zurich. Zeitgeist: The Sound of Text This work was a site-specific performance and included elements of sound art, installation, and audience participation. By taking live sound recordings Kuster captured my actions on a typewriter and also my use of voice, to play back a soundscape. The use of rhythm, volume, and pitch were mixed in real time with sound software and played back to the audience. A conversation and dialogue between old and new technology, as well as a linking and mapping between: the gallery, current exhibition, the audience and artists. The work was influenced by a previous sound art piece I made called 'The sound of text' published in AirCandy. Auckland Nz. 2003. Along with an interest in the word Zeitgeist which was spoken about in my studies at the Goetheanum. Dianna Brinsden http://marcokuster.ch/ Photography: Duncan Bell Video: Dianna Brinsden

Live Art
In collaboration with Martina von Holn. Commissioned Live Art work that traveled along Millwall Dock in Isle of Dogs, London. Performed 22nd - 26th April 2008. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oT5n8vGbFAg&feature=related She and Her invited the audience on an unusual excursion through urban space a journey through the Millwall Dock. The work traveled along a route which used to be defined by shipping industry and has now become a residential area. While becoming aware of the fragility between now and then the walk pays tribute to the overlooked, the forgotten and the discarded. www.space.org.uk Video: David Palazon. Performed 22nd June 2007. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMEqyqxAga0&feature=related She and Her invited the public on an exploration of transitory spaces by mapping the public space of Camberwell cross roads through a series of interventions which travel within the framework of the changing phases of traffic light circuits. Between green and red, walk and wait, travel and rest the two performers embarked on a continuous journey from one axis of the road to the next while exploring ways of challenging public behaviour patterns. http://www.camberwellarts.org.uk Video: David Palazon

Baba - Father 2010

Baba - Father 2010

Cabaret Voltaire (Zürich)

Live Art
In collaboration with Hoda Jaberipour. Performed 28th February 2010 in German and English. Baba – Father In life, the riches of different cultures give the world its living, breathing, fabric of humanity. It would be fair to say that no person can fully look through the eyes of another culture, unless they belong to that culture. Although, perhaps belonging can be experienced in different ways. Faced with a new challenge I was asked to collaborate with Hoda Jaberipour to create a Live Art work from her biography. She was born in Iran and immigrated to Switzerland when she was three years old. Her father was separate from her family through deportation. The only connection she has to him are fragments on a old dubbed-over cassette. This work Baba - Father is not a political commentary but an expression of love between daughter and father, a moment for peace within. Photography: Alberto Espinosa Video:

Live Art
In collaboration with Martina von Holn. Commissioned Live Art work, St Anne's Wells Park, Brighton. Performed 11th May 2008. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LqImv29a9s She and Her embarked on an exploration of public space which invited the audience to become part of a series of traveling installations. The piece is an interpretation of the fairy tale 'The Princess on the Pea' by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. 'Neverland descends on St Anne's Well Gardens as 26 Letters steps outdoors for another interactive art trail, this year in the swashbuckling company of Peter Pan and friends. Five specially commissioned art works by artists, sculptors and Live Art performers from around the country (Eilidh Bryan, She and Her, Alison Duddle and Weston Hammond, Athina Valha, Kate Strachan) each provide a cryptic clue to the title of a classic children's fable, fairytale or story. All you have to do is piece together the puzzle' www.brightonfestival.org Photography: David Palazon Video: David Palazon

Live Art
In collaboration with Martina von Holn. She and Her were invited to create a site-specific Live Art work in Greenwich Foot Tunnel, London. Performed 3rd March 2008 and Exhibited April 2008. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_-kiQvq0lU&feature=related She and Her invited the viewer to discover traces of a secret Live Art performance, through Photographic Montage and found objects. Set in the two lift spaces either side of Greenwich Foot Tunnel the artists created an unusual connection between the two sides of the Thames River. Upon arrival the visitor is drawn into the remnants of an initially one off secret performance; two women of strangely familiar and correlating looks are travelling the tunnel departing either side, meeting in its exact low point to encounter an exchanged. http://www.occupymytime.co.uk Video: David Palazon

Tate Modern

Live Art
In collaboration with other interdisciplinary artists. Performing Arts Masterclass, from 10th-14th July 2006. This was led by Susanne Thomas, Phoebe von Held and Sophie Jump, from the Seven Sister Group. On the evening of the 14th July a live art event was performed to the public which took them on a journey through different spaces within the Tate Modern. Three of Brinsdens works were chosen and developed for the final performance. Brinsden also met Martina von Holn in this Masterclass. In 2007 they began working collaboratively forming the performance duo 'She and Her'. 'This was a five-day workshop for professional artists who work with space, performance, dance, design or live art. The workshop explores the tension between the polished displays of Tate Modern and the back-of-house areas, and involves theoretical and practical sessions. The participants create site-specific performances in various locations within the gallery that lead to a final public performance.' http://www.sevensistersgroup.com Photography: Martina von Holn.
